We are probably about to see some changes in royal duties, seeing as Prince Philip has announced his retirement for fall of 2017. His duties will have to be shifted to other members of the royal family, and in view of this, the Queen has been quoted to criticize the way that Harry and William communicate with the public. Reportedly, she asked them to present themselves less “soul-baring” and more stately. This made us think back to many things the Queen has said during her long reign. Some of the following quotes are full of wisdom, but others show her humorous side.
“Good memories are our second chance at happiness.”
This quote shows her wisdom when it comes to looking back at her life.
“I have to be seen to be believed.”
The Queen has never been on to disappear into a crowd. She always wears vibrant colors, and she has always had a bold approach to life.
“Let us not take ourselves too seriously. None of us has a monopoly on wisdom.”
The typical British humor and self-awareness also applies to the royal family. She knows that she doesn’t know everything, and being a queen doesn’t go to her head.
“Like all best families, we have our share of eccentricities, of impetuous and wayward youngsters and of family disagreements.”
I wonder to whom she could have been referring … well, she definitely knows what’s going on, and she takes it with a smile!
“It has been women who have breathed gentleness and care into the hard progress of humankind.”
The Queen is strong and dignified, but at the same time compassionate and generous, like all women in the royal family. No British monarch before her has done so much charity work; and she is an inspiration to all women.
“They are not royal. They just happen to have me as their aunt.”
This is what she said about the children of her sister Margaret (pictured above), David and Sarah. Of course, they are technically royal; but this quote shows the sassy side of the Queen’s personality.
“The upward course of a nation’s history is due in the long run to the soundness of heart of its average men and women.”
Truer words have never been spoken. And it also shows her modest and humble outlook on the world; she doesn’t think that she is better than everyone else.
“My husband has quite simply been my strength and stay all these years, and I owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim.”
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are going to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on November 20, 2017; since they got married in 1947, they have been by each other’s sides. Royal or not, that is impressive!
“Have you been playing a long time?”
Being a queen is a very demanding job, and you can’t expect her to know everything about pop culture and music. When she asked Eric Clapton this question at a reception in 2005, he answered: “It must be 45 years now.” At the same event, she asked Led Zeppelin if he was a guitar player, too. But she has the best excuse to not knowing.
“These wretched babies don’t come until they’re ready.”
Even the Queen is human and can get frustrated with pregnancies. This remark was made in 1988, when Princess Beatrice was overdue. Elizabeth II certainly has seen a lot of babies in her lifetime.
