This Northern Lights Marriage Proposal Will Surely Make You Swoon

A romantic marriage proposal is something most girls dream and fantasize about and what better way to amp up the romance than to propose in a jaw-dropping place? Dale Sharpe definitely knew how. Last March 6, he proposed to his long-time girlfriend Karlie Russell under the Northern Lights. The couple who have been dating for seven years experienced the infamous attraction in the Lofoten Islands of Norway.

Coincidentally, the pair works as photographers for DK Photography, which is based in Gold Coast, Australia. Because of their work, they have already seen and photographed the Northern Lights or the Aurora borealis, as referred to by some. Despite seeing the sight for more than 30 times already, the couple couldn’t help but gush about it during the time of the proposal. Dale told Daily Mail Australia that “it was the most amazing display of color in the Aurora that we’ve ever seen.”

Curious to how Dale made the proposal? Well, it was pretty smooth and unassuming. Apparently, he tried to take a selfie with Karlie but she resisted at first. Karlie wanted to move to another location and had wanted to take a landscape shot instead. However, she gave into Dale’s request for a selfie but to Dale, this was his cue to kneel down on one knee and ask for Karlie’s hand in marriage. It was truly a magical moment for the two, especially for Karlie. She even gushed a little bit to the Huffington Post. “I was completely blown away as it was the last thing I was expecting at that time. I kept telling Dale to hurry up so we could get a landscape shot instead. After he set up the camera, then to my surprise got down on one knee, I was in shock but of course said, ‘yes!’”

Indeed, the proposal was well-thought and well-orchestrated. However, did you know that this was actually Dale’s second attempt at proposing? Originally, he wanted to pop the question nine months earlier when they were bound for Iceland. Dale had hidden the ring inside a lotion bottle to keep things on the low. He told Karlie that the pricey lotion was his mom’s. Once they got to the airport, however, she threw out the lotion with the ring in it because Dale’s luggage was overweight.

He only realized that the lotion with the $4,000 engagement ring it was missing later that trip. Dale asked Karlie where it was and when she told her what had happened, he was devastated. Of course, he had to keep things to himself so as not to ruin the surprise. Dale had to save up some money again to buy another engagement ring. “I politely said, ‘That’s OK,’ while internally screaming. I couldn’t really tell her and ruin my proposal plan,” Dale revealed to the Huffington Post.

Dale and Karlie’s seven-year relationship started when they met online and they were living on the opposite coasts of Australia then. Their first real meeting was in Gold Coast when they collaborated on a sunset photo shoot. Now, the two are happily engaged. Wedding plans are currently on hold as of now as the pair still plans to work and save for their future. “Having to buy two engagement rings means the savings is a little behind!” said Dale.
